This is really scary, actually.
So basically, the government is describing Anonymous using the same terms that it applied to Al-Qaeda ten years ago. They’re trying to paint Anonymous as a terrorist organization, I guess in order to inspire the same blind (in this case) animosity in Americans.
I have to say, I don’t know if I agree with some of Anonymous’s actions (e.g. taking down the FBI website - that shit could be important), but they’re sure as fuck less of a threat than Al-Qaeda. Herein lies the difference: If both groups were presented with the opportunity to take down cyber infrastructure critical to the survival of many American citizens, Anonymous wouldn’t do it. Al-Qaeda definitely would.
Contrary to what the government seems to think, the Internet is not the Old West of this millennium. It’s not populated solely by lawless crooks who only use the Internet to download illegal shit by the terabyte and take down websites. The Internet is, above all else, a community.
And I think it’s about damn time our government swallowed its pride, got some so-called nerds into Congress in one way or another, and found out what the Internet is actually about.
